The Birthday Boy

Ean just turned seven, even though at times he acts like he is two or nineteen.

I know that I’m tardy of posting the pictures, but life has just been like that. This year, we mixed it up from the normal birthdays that we have done in the past. We did a seperate family birthday lunch at Ean’s favorite restaurant Buffalo Wings and Ribs, and we allowed Ean to have four friends to have a sleep-over. The boys got to make their own personal pizzas, play the wii, and basically terrorize Ella, the cat, and the parents.

Unfortunately one of the boys got sick the day of the sleepover and couldn’t make it, so Ean only had three. I have to say it wasn’t as bad as we thought it would be and once they settled down after the initial madness. The boys and Ean all had fun as Ean celebrated his seventh birthday.

The Bike Training Trials

20110822-120626.jpg

As far back as I can remember, I’ve known how to ride a bike. I have quick memory flashes of learning how to ride when a neighbor girl pushes the yellow bike (I can’t even remember whose bike it was) that I’m sitting on and I start pedaling and begin my riding career. Ever since then I’ve been able to ride a bike. I can go years without being on a bike and as soon as I hop on a bike, I can ride it. So how hard can it be to teach Ean to finally ride his bike without training wheels.

Yesterday was my first attempt and it didn’t go nearly as well as I had planned.

My first attempt ending miserably with me getting more upset than I needed to and Ean in tears. I felt bad because I feel like I somehow failed him in my teaching methods. I’m not sure if it was my fear of him falling or his fear of falling that kept me from just pushing the bike and letting go in the traditional teaching method. I felt like a failed parent because I kept thinking I shouldn’t have let him have training wheels so long, I should have pushed him to learn sooner, I should have taken him to a bike training course.

I was/am utterly clueless as how I can teach my boy, who picks up on everything so fast yet struggles on a rite of passage that every kid goes through. As we walked together with him trying to pedal, I’m holding his bike by the handle bars and asking him to balance himself so I can let go, but he never quite does it. He looks up with those puppy dog eyes and says “I don’t know how to balance myself, how do you do it?” Uhhhhhh….. I don’t know how to explain that.

April helped and had Ean stand on one foot and told him that he was balancing, but I don’t think he related that to being on a bike. So I tried the one training wheel method and I wish I would have gotten a picture of him leaning completely to one side to not fall over. Scratch that idea.

We tried the holding the bike without training wheels and I never had the confidence to let go as he wobbled from side to side and never could hold the bike steady. In the end, I took off the pedals and just explained to Ean to push the bike with his feet and try and go as long as he could without touching the ground. He seemed to pick that up and make some small improvements on his balancing on his bike. I’m going to go with that method by having him practice that going and just lifting his feet. Once we see his balance become a bit more stable, I’ll put the pedals back on and try again.

Any hints you can give me in trying to complete this rite of passage for Ean would be greatly appreciated before I end up pulling out what little hair I do have on top of my head.

Graduating Kindergarten

After a very quick year, Ean has completed his first full day school year. On June 7th, Lancaster had their Kindergarten Progression Ceremony, Ean broke out in songs that we have asked him all year what he was learning with the response “Nothing”. It was a fun and enjoyable experience that I’ve attached some videos to the post for those that couldn’t make it.

There were several tears as many realized that our little boy is growing up. Next thing you know he will be graduation high school and moving on.

Ean’s Tball 2011

20110624-104324.jpg

Ean is off to another year of T-ball (Actually it is coach’s pitch). Short of a few rain storms, we’ve gotten most of the games in so far. We are starting to see quite a bit improvement in his play even without any large amount of practice time.

He cranked a good hit yesterday, which would have been a double if they allowed the kids to run more than a single base.

He seems to be enjoying himself and he improves every game. It has been a blast watching him.

The Kids of Neverland

Back in March, the Fort Wayne Botanical Gardens had an exhibit for Peter Pan and the Lost Boys. The four of us, as well as grandparents Sablics, headed out to the second star on the right and traveled straight until morning. It was the first time that any of us had been to the Gardens in quite some time so we looked forward to see what else they offered. The pirate ship and the remaining of the main room gave the kids a chance to run around, use their imagination and enjoy themselves. I was impressed with the Pirate ship and some of the props, but I was really hoping to see some “actors” dressed up and interact with the kids.

The kids had fun though and in the end that is all that matters.

Lunch with Ean

I know that I’ve been bad about updating the blog. Hopefully I’ll get better at some point, however I will at least try and post some shots of the kids everyday.

This was taken during a lunch visit that I had with Ean during school. He was having a bad spell at school for a bit but seems to be over it now.

Ean’s Birthday Party – A Mario Party.

Yesterday, we held Ean’s 6th Birthday party that April had made plans and prepared for over a month. It was our first party with kids other than family members. We think the kids all enjoyed themselves throughout the party. In all actuality, the only person we had any issues with was Ean. He was only about opening his gifts and playing with them, he could care less about his friends once the gifts were opened.

However, all of the other kids all had a good time playing and it appeared that they enjoyed themselves.

Here are some pictures and videos of the party party below:

Happy Birthday, Ean!

My little boy is growing up. He turns six today and it only seems like yesterday that he came into my life. He has taught me more about living life than any other person. I enjoy watching him as he works through issues and the pure joy that he has when he completes something on his own without any help. I see a bit of myself in him, when he gets frustrated at not being able to figure out something.

I love watching him use his imagination as he comes up with the some of the grandest ideas that no one else around him would have come up with. We have done everything in our power to allow his imagination to flourish including April making him costumes or just letting him play for hours on end.

He can only be a kid once and I want him to enjoy it. So, happy birthday, Ean! I hope you enjoy it, plus many more.

Happy Halloween from the 4 McIntosh Apples

We wanted to wish you happy and safe Halloween.

We actually did our visiting and trick or treating on Friday and Saturday night. Since we are trying to keep the kids on a schedule, we wanted to stay home after 8.

Figaro Missing – A 24 Hour Comic Day Comic

Ean and I went up to Digital Comic Book Service (DCBS) on Saturday for an annual event called 24 Hour Comic Day. The purpose of the event is to share a love of comics and produce a 24 page comic in 24 hours. Penciled, inked, colored, and lettered. It is a very tough challenge and not everyone completes it.

I went knowing that we would probably not even make 1 or 2 hours, however I wanted Ean to experience the feeling of how to make a comic book. At first Ean was complaining that no one was talking to him, although I tried to explain that they were all working on their own comics. Then he didn’t want to draw anything, he wanted to tell me what to draw. So we started off that way until he figured out that he didn’t like my drawings as I wasn’t drawing them the way that he wanted so he took over, which was the whole point of us going.

Below is the comic book that he created.
